Google AI Mode Is Live in Germany: What Munich Businesses Need to Do Now
Google AI Mode is active in Germany. SISTRIX data shows a 59% drop in clicks at position 1. What this means for local businesses in Munich — and what to do about it.
Since this year, Google has been answering many searches with a single AI-generated response at the top of the page — complete, direct, with no need to click any link. That's Google AI Mode. It's active in Germany.
What the data shows
SISTRIX measured the impact: websites at position 1 are seeing 59% fewer clicks than before AI Overviews were introduced — roughly 265 million lost clicks per month in Germany alone.
The SOCi Local Visibility Index 2026: only 1.2% of local businesses get recommended by ChatGPT, vs. 35.9% appearing in Google's local 3-pack. Visibility is shifting. Most businesses aren't prepared.
The misconception: "SEO is dead"
What's changed is what visibility means. Previously: appearing on page 1. Today: being cited in the AI answer. Studies show websites cited in AI Overviews see up to 80% more clicks on the linked entry. The new game is about being one of the sources the AI relies on.
What determines whether you get cited
1. Structured data (Schema Markup) — explicitly tells Google: this is a law firm in Munich, specialising in employment law, open Monday–Friday. No guessing.
2. FAQ content in structured format — AI engines pull from FAQ sections in correct schema format. Answering client questions in a machine-readable FAQ block significantly increases citation chances.
3. Consistent business data — Name, address, phone number identical on website, Google Business Profile, and relevant directories. Inconsistency signals unreliability.
The first step
Google's Rich Results Test is free. Paste your URL, read the output. In most cases: empty or errors. That's the starting point.
