llms.txt — What It Is and Whether Your Munich Business Website Needs One
llms.txt is a new standard that tells AI crawlers which content on your website they can index. What it is, who needs it, and whether you need to act on it now as a Munich business.
A few years ago, almost nobody thought about robots.txt. Then search engines became important. llms.txt is the next step in the same logic — a text file on your website specifically addressed to AI crawlers.
What llms.txt is
Accessible at yourdomain.com/llms.txt, it contains structured guidance for AI crawlers: what can be indexed, which pages are most useful. A simple example:
# TB Webdesign Munich
> Web design and AEO agency in Munich.
## Services
- [Web Design Munich](https://www.tb-webdesign.com/web-design)
- [AEO & AI Visibility](https://www.tb-webdesign.com/aeo)
## Blog
- [Blog](https://www.tb-webdesign.com/blog)
The point: give AI crawlers a quick, structured overview of your most important content.
What llms.txt is not
Not a guarantee of AI visibility. Doesn't replace structured data, Bing Places, or FAQPage schema. It's a supplementary signal — not a foundation. Also not a privacy tool — use robots.txt entries for known AI crawlers (GPTBot, anthropic-ai, PerplexityBot) to control training data use.
Who reads llms.txt
- Perplexity — reads it actively
- Anthropic (Claude) — uses it as a hint
- OpenAI (ChatGPT) — no official support yet, reads
robots.txt
Does your Munich business website need one?
Haven't set up structured data yet: Start there. Schema Markup, FAQPage, Bing Places have significantly more impact.
Foundations already in place: Yes, worth adding. About 30 minutes, costs nothing, growing relevance.
Content-heavy website: Even more worthwhile — giving AI crawlers a map of your most important pages helps them prioritise correctly.
