Why Your Munich Business Doesn't Show Up When Someone Asks ChatGPT for a Recommendation
A growing number of potential clients no longer Google your business — they ask ChatGPT. If you're not in the answer, you don't exist for them. Here's why and what's missing.
A growing number of potential clients no longer type "Anwalt München Arbeitsrecht" into Google and click through ten results. They ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google's AI Overview: "Which employment lawyer in Munich should I contact?" And they expect an answer — not a list of links.
If your business isn't in that answer, you don't exist for that person.
Why AI tools skip most local businesses
AI search tools don't browse your website the way a human does. They rely on structured signals — machine-readable data that tells them exactly what your business does, where it operates, who it serves, and how to contact you. When that data is missing, the AI defaults to businesses that have made themselves easy to understand.
Most Munich business websites — even well-designed ones — don't have this data. They have a homepage that looks professional, a contact form, and maybe a Google Business Profile. That's not enough for AI systems to confidently recommend you.
What the businesses that do appear have in common
- Their website contains structured data (Schema.org markup) that explicitly states their business type, location, service areas, and contact details
- Their Google Reviews are linked to their website in a machine-readable format
- Their most common client questions are answered on the site in a format AI can extract and quote
None of this is visible to a human visitor. It lives in the code of the page. But it's what separates a business that AI recommends from one it ignores.
What you can do about it
The fix isn't a new website. In most cases, it's a structured data layer added to your existing site. A basic setup for a Munich law firm or medical practice covers: business type, location, service areas, credentials, opening hours, and a FAQ block with the questions your clients actually ask.
Once in place, Google Search Console validates it within 48–72 hours. Rich results typically appear within two weeks. AI visibility follows as crawlers update.
